What a swell party it was…

The BK crew sure know how to lay on a good bash, and the 7th of December was no different. The perfect occasion to experience the best of Swartland country hospitality, with fine food, great wines and excellent company, in the lush gardens surrounding the main Farmhouse.

Twin sisters Louise (chef) and Lesley (manager) Gillett run a first-class establishment and their Pop-Up Events are already famous for their unique food and wine pairings. Each event sees a local chef teaming up with Louise to design a once-off menu paired with exceptional regional wines. Last night, Gil Ferreira of Flying Pig Curesmiths in Darling cooked and served Wagyu beef and smoked boar from the farm along with select Darling Brew craft beers, and Swartland wines chosen by Wine Kollektiv owner Anton Espost.

Seven courses were each introduced by Louise and Gil at the long table set in underneath the trees, followed by an introduction of the chosen paired wines by Anton Espost – a brilliant and entertaining raconteur based in the nearby town of Riebeek-Kasteel.

We were dazzled and delighted by some stunning presentations, literally incorporating the key elements of Smoke and Fire. The food is fun, inventive, hearty and delicious. In between courses and before the meal, guests could relax in a separate alfresco area where roaring open wood fires kept them warm and cosy. Service by BK staff was smooth, friendly and exceptionally professional as always, all contributing to a truly memorable night.

We stayed over in the main Farm House and after the magnificent breakfast buffet in the airy Conservatory, reluctantly headed back home to Cape town, vowing to return for future special Smoke and Fire events planned for 2019.

“A warm summer evening. A lush garden. Soft grass invites bare feet to meet. Stars peep through an darkened night sky. The exhilarating perfumes of food and nature mingle in the air. Welcome to another edition of the BK Smoke & Fire Food Fanfare. On the lawns behind the main house this time. An old-style garden dinner, with long tables, long stories, bold flavours. Sisters Lesley and Louise Gillett have invited charcutier Gil Ferreira from The Flying Pig Curesmiths in Darling to join the ranks and serve what you’ve come to expect from our unique pop-up affairs: sensual, unusual culinary compositions of crackling good taste, honest ingredients and startling combinations.
