Selection of Italian small plate dishes aka antipasti at Terra del Capo, Anthonij Rupert Wine Estate, Franschhoek

Secret season indulgence at the Terra del Capo Antipasto Bar: a rippingly good selection of real Italian small plate dishes is served at the Terra del Capo Antipasto Bar outside Franschhoek. If you’ve never visited Terra del Capo before, make it your mission to do so this winter.

It’s easy to find, located near the entrance of the Anthonij Rupert Wine estate in Franschhoek. While you’re there, pop upstairs to the tasting room for the full range of estate lifestyle wines: Anthonij Rupert, Terra del Capo, Cape of Good Hope. L’Ormarins and Protea. Join the wine club for special offers and unique event experiences!

Several different food and wine pairings are offered here, like the brand new ‘Shiraz & Charcuterie Pairing’, presented in the comfort of the Terra del Capo Tasting Room. This latest bespoke offering joins the much-loved Italian Cheese & Wine Pairing, as well as the L’Ormarins Methodé Cap Classique & Nougat Pairing.

Shiraz and Charcuterie Pairing:

Charcuterie’s salty, aromatic flavours and sweet, rich fattiness are naturally complemented by the typically bright acidity, bold fruitiness and spiciness of outstanding Shiraz wines – a partnership which this tasting experience aims to highlight. The Shiraz & Charcuterie Pairing presents three of the estate’s Shiraz wines, respectively from the popular Protea, terroir-driven Cape of Good Hope and flagship Anthonij Rupert ranges, accompanied by three expertly-sourced Italian charcuteries – Napoli salami, Coppa and Parma ham.

The pairing will be available as of 1 May, from Tuesday to Sunday, at a cost of R120 per person. The estate operates on a ‘By Appointment Only’ basis, so pre-booking is essential. For more information and reservations, contact 021 874 9074 or email tasting@rupertwines.com.

Terra del Capo Antipasto Bar:

Signature favourites from previous menus include the crisp fried Calamari (with a zesty new Parsley and Lemon Pesto twist), and crunchy Whitebait with tangy Aioli. Regular guests will be thrilled to know that Chef HW Pieterse’s hearty, homemade Salsiccia sausages also make a comeback on the new menu, accompanied by ‘Cannellini Al Fiasco’ – a traditional Italian bean stew.

Chef HW and his team will continue to hero local ingredients during the winter months, with the introduction of a Baby Vegetable Crudité, using vegetables grown in the L’Ormarins gardens and served with garlicky anchoïade, and fresh Ceviche prepared from local Franschhoek Trout, dressed with honey, lime and ginger. While local produce remains the focus, some ingredients are uncompromisingly sourced from Italy for their superb quality: Genuine Italian artichokes, truffles and Taleggio cheese are amongst the exquisite imported produce this season.

A mini lasagne is also on the winter menu this year! Although not strictly Antipasti, this dish pairs perfectly with the estate’s Terra del Capo Sangiovese, and Chef HW couldn’t resist adding it to the offering.

The Terra del Capo Antipasti Bar is open from Tuesday to Sunday (lunches only) and, as the estate operates on a ‘By Appointment Only’ basis, pre-booking is essential. For reservations, please contact 021 874 9074 or email tasting@rupertwines.com

The Terra del Capo Tasting Room, situated at the entrance to the property, was designed to showcase the company’s Italian-inspired Terra del Capo range.

Wine tasting here is a relaxed, indulgent experience in elegant surroundings. Guests have a bird’s eye view of the activity in the cellar through a glass wall, as well as panoramic views of the vineyards and mountains.

Below the tasting room is an antipasto bar, perfect for a quick lunch of freshly prepared local ingredients. The private tasting room can accommodate up to 18 guests, and is ideal for larger parties.

A spacious counter for formal tastings is the focal point of the mezzanine-level tasting room, while intimate lounge areas to either side of this are ideal for wine tasting in a more leisurely, conversational style. – website
