Cocktails With a Cause: The Night Cape Town’s Best Shook, Stirred and Served Magic

-

There are nights that hum softly with promise, and then there are nights that SING. The Cause | Effect Cocktail Kitchen x The Test Kitchen Fledgelings collaboration was the latter: a one-night-only performance of flavour, mentorship, and a very handsome dose of hospitality excellence.

The venue was none other than Cause | Effect at the V&A Waterfront, which is a place that feels more like a theatre for cocktail artistry than a bar. And the stars of the show were none other than Chef Luke Dale Roberts (yes, that Luke Dale Roberts) and cocktail connoisseur Kurt Schlechter, South Africa’s resident cocktail alchemist and founder of the award-winning Cause | Effect. Together, they pulled off an evening that flirted with perfection.

Christopher, Sithembs, and I arrived ready for trouble (or at least for tequila). What we found instead was something that can only be described as pure liquid luxury. From the very first sip, we were seduced by cocktails that told stories; each one perfectly balanced, unapologetically local, and a little bit wild. Quite like a love letter to Cape Town itself!

The night’s small plates were nothing short of a parade of deliciousness. I want you to think vetkoek with smoked snoek pâté, Korean fried chicken with ponzu emulsion, and fish tacos so good they had me reconsidering every past taco I’ve ever had (and my personal beer-battered recipe is already up there). There was a sense of generosity in each dish, which is the kind of cooking that feels both elegant and utterly unpretentious, with just enough chaos to make it human.

And then there was the moment. The one we’ll all be talking about for weeks. A signature cocktail created just for the evening; kissed with rooibos bitters and inspired by a sweet little collaboration with Clay Café Cape Town. (And yes, the Clay Café you take your friends to for ceramics and deep conversations.) Guests were even invited to name the drink, which, naturally, led to plenty of laughter, questionable puns, and a few creative suggestions best left unpublished.

Under the glow of moody lights and the hum of the DJ’s setlist, Kurt worked the bar like a poet in motion, while Chef Luke floated between tables, sharing smiles and snippets of the evening’s inspiration. It was less an event and more a celebration of what Cape Town does best! A sheer connection between community, craft, and cocktails with a conscience.

But the magic of the night wasn’t just in the drinks or the food (though, believe me, they were divine). It was in the collaboration itself between the Fledgelings programme’s heartbeat of mentorship and learning, paired with Cause | Effect’s world-class creativity. Watching young chefs and bartenders work alongside the best in the business reminded us why this city’s culinary scene is truly world-class: it’s driven by people who pour heart first, spirits second.

We left the night a little buzzed, a lot inspired, and already planning our next visit. Because some experiences deserve more than a single toast.

So here’s to flavour, mentorship, and the kind of collaboration that reminds you why we love this city so much. It doesn’t just feed us, it raises us.

Until next round,
Sabs
